Creating Recovery Plans

A recovery plan orchestrates restoring protected VMs at a backup location. Recovery plans can either recover all specified VMs at once or, with what is essentially a runbook functionality, use power-on sequences with optionally configurable interstage delays to recover applications gracefully and in the required order.

Recovery plans also allow protected VMs to run custom embedded scripts. If you have NGT installed, you can use a custom script to perform a variety of customizations. On failover, the recovery plan provides a variety of options to change or maintain VM IP addresses. The plan shows you the last four digits of the VM's new IP address beforehand so you can take action on it.

Create a Recovery Plan

• Data Protection > Recovery Plans

  • Create New Recovery Plan

  • Name Policy

• Select locations:

  • Add the primary and recovery locations to the plan

  

Add VMs

• + VM(s) > Change VM Name in dropdown to Category

• Stages in Recovery can be configured here if you created multiple categories. Overwise select Environment: Production

Example

• Multiple stages can be created with delay’s in between if restoring specific applications that have dependencies.

• By selection a VM you my also enable scripts to be ran. This requires NGT to be installed and the scripts to be located in specific directory:

Windows:

Production:Scripts/production/vm_recovery.bat
Test:Scripts/test/vm_recovery.bat

Linux:

Production:/usr/local/sbin/production_vm_recovery
Test:/usr/local/sbin/test_vm_recovery

Review General Networking Map

You don’t have to do anything here, it’s just kinda neat.

If everyone looks OK, select OK. Got it.

Networking

Network mappings are configured here for the planned/unplanned failovers and test failover. The networks are designated as such under their respective sites.

Nutanix Guest Tools

Remember that NGT Must be installed on all VMs selected for DR.

• Select the appropriate network

• Custom IP mapping can be configured under advanced settings if the client is using static IPs.

Recovery Plan Summary

Select a Recovery Plan to see a summary page.

This includes all of the details of the recovery plan, and executions for the recovery plan including status.

All actionable abilities for the recovery plan are listed along the top.
