# FAQ

Quick answers to the questions that come up most. If you're looking for how to do something rather than why something happened, the [User Guide](https://kb.expedient.com/docs/getting-started-with-ai-ctrl) articles cover it in more detail.

## About the platform

### Is my company's information safe here?

Yes. AI CTRL runs in a single-tenant environment, and none of the model providers behind it retain your data or train on it. The platform doesn't build a profile of you and doesn't carry anything between conversations unless you deliberately save it. Follow your organization's own data handling policies as you would anywhere else.

### Is there a mobile app?

No download, but AI CTRL runs as an app on your phone or computer. See [AI CTRL Chat App Installation](https://kb.expedient.com/docs/chat-app-installation) — it's a shortcut to the same secure address, not a separate application.

### Why is my browser asking to "look for and connect to any device on your local network"?

That's the app installation prompt. Allowing it lets your browser set up AI CTRL as a standalone app on your computer. Declining it only means you'll keep using AI CTRL in a normal browser tab.

### Can I have a conversation that isn't saved?

Yes — open the model dropdown and choose **Temporary Chat**. It won't appear in your conversation history.

> Worth knowing: temporary chats are still recorded in your organization's compliance log, the same as any other conversation. "Temporary" means it isn't saved to your history, not that it isn't recorded.

## Getting good answers

### Which model should I use?

Start with the **Smart Model Router** — it reads your question and assigns a model for you. See [Choosing a Model](https://kb.expedient.com/docs/choosing-a-model) if you'd rather pick deliberately.

### What if the AI gives me incorrect information?

Verify anything that matters, particularly for recent events. Models can be confidently wrong, and their knowledge has a cutoff date. Turn on **web search** when a question depends on current information, and check citations when an answer draws on documents you attached. See [Understanding AI Basics](https://kb.expedient.com/docs/understanding-ai-basics).

### How long can a conversation be?

Long conversations gradually lose quality — the model starts missing earlier details or drifting toward generic answers — and they cost more, since every message re-sends everything discussed so far. When a chat gets unwieldy, ask for a summary and start fresh with it. As a habit: new topic, new chat.

### Why does the AI miss rows or misread my spreadsheet?

Attachments are converted to text, which separates your column headers from your numbers — so the model fills the gaps with guesses. For spreadsheet work, turn on the **Structured Data Tool** in the tools menu. It loads the file into a real table it can query, so calculations come back computed rather than estimated.

### What file types can I upload?

Documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, text, Markdown), spreadsheets and data files (Excel, CSV, TSV), images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, WebP, BMP, SVG), and common code and structured formats (JSON, XML, HTML, Python, Ruby, shell scripts). Text is extracted from all of them, including text inside images.

## When something looks wrong

### "It says it has no internet access."

Web search is a toggle, off by default. Turn it on from the integrations menu and you'll see an indicator confirming it's active. Not a fault — it's off until someone turns it on.

### A download link the model gave me doesn't work.

Model providers sometimes offer links to their own file storage, which AI CTRL doesn't use. Ask for the output in the conversation and use the **Export as** buttons beneath the response instead — PDF, Word, or Excel.

### "Change Password" doesn't do anything.

If your organization uses single sign-on, your password is managed by your own identity provider rather than by AI CTRL. That setting only applies to direct-access and service accounts.

### The AI seems to have forgotten what we discussed.

Check you're in the same conversation rather than a new one. Each conversation stands alone — nothing carries between them unless you save it as a memory or put it in your personal system prompt.

### The answers are too generic.

Give it more to work with: attach the relevant document, describe your situation specifically, and set up your [personal system prompt](https://kb.expedient.com/docs/personal-system-prompt) so it knows who you are and how you want to be answered.

### A feature I expected isn't there.

Most capabilities can be switched off per model or across your whole deployment. If something's missing, it's usually a deliberate configuration choice — your administrator can tell you what's available.

### I can't sign in.

Check you're on your organization's correct AI CTRL address and using your work credentials rather than a personal account. If it persists, contact your IT team.

## Still stuck?

Contact an administrator at your organization. They can help directly or raise a support ticket on your behalf.
