# How-to Restore Files and Folders from a Linux Virtual Machine

### Introduction

Restoration of individual files and/or folders should be utilized when a smaller subset of data is needed for restore. A restore task can be initiated that will recover files and folders back to the original or an alternate VM.

### Procedure

1. Ensure the Linux VM you wish to recover to has the proper prerequisites in place as detailed on the [How-to Install the Cohesity Helper App (Linux)](/v1/docs/how-to-install-the-cohesity-helper-app-linux) page
2. [Login](/v1/docs/how-to-access-cloud-data-protection) to the respective Cloud Data Protection system
3. From the navigation bar at the top of the page, select the **Data Protection** → **Recoveries** tab

4. Select the **Recover** button and then **Files or Folders**

5. Utilize the search utility to locate the file(s) and/or folder(s) to be restored
  1. You can search by either the name of the file or by the path of the file
  2. Wildcards and partial names are supported

6. **Click** the desired file or folder to restore and choose the snapshot you wish to recover from

7. Select **Recover to Server**
8. If you wish to recover multiple files or folders in a single task, select **Add More** until you have selected all the files you wish to restore, then select **Continue to Options**
9. Configure the restore on the **Recovery Options** page

1. Upon success of the restore you will have the files and folders placed into the location select on the **Recovery Options** page
