Article summary

While the creation of additional Folders and Nested Shares will be the most common File System configuration action take, please consult the Global File System Architecture KB. Creating unnecessary Folders and Nested shares will increase the complexity of the deployment and require additional administration.

Create the Folder Structure

This section is only required if you wish to configure an entirely new folder in the Global File System, if you are simply attaching another filer to an existing folder skip to Create the Nested Share below.

  1. On a machine with local access to the filer, access the filer via Windows File Explorer
  2. Navigate to the Default Admin share listed as Cloud
  3. Navigate to the users, ServiceAccount, CloudFolder location
  4. Right Click and select New Folder
    1. Name this folder as desired
  5. Right Click the new folder, select Properties, select the Security tab, select Advanced to configure permissions
    1. Select Disable Inheritance and Remove all inherited permissions from this object
    2. Configure the permissions to Expedient standards or configure permissions as desired
      1. Reconfigure the folder owner to the Domain Admins group, utilizing the Change button

      2. Configure the Permissions
        1. Domain Admins - Full Control and Domain Users - Modify are best practice
    3. Select OK and OK
  6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for any additional shares

Create the Nested Share(s)

Now that the folder structure has been created by an Administrator in the Global File System, nested shares will be utilized to make the locations available outside of the Administrator Share. As noted above, if the folder structure already exists that step can be skipped. When deploying a new vGateway to an existing configuration you will likely only need to configure the Nested Shares on the vGateway.

  1. Login to the vGateway
  2. Select Share and then Shares

  3. Select New Share
    1. Select a Folder to Share
      1. Expand the Cloud tree and locate the folder you wish to create a share for, selecting it
      2. Select Next
    2. Specify a Share Name
      1. Network Share Name:    Desired Name (Removing Cloud is suggested)
      2. Comment:                        Optional Comment
      3. Select Next
    3. Configure Sharing Protocols
      1. Windows File Sharing:      Windows ACL Emulation Mode (Windows ACLs) or Only Authenticated Users (Local SMB Accounts)
      2. Block Extensions:               None
      3. Client Side Caching:           Disabled
      4. FTP:                                    Disabled
      5. Search:                               Disabled

      6. Select Next
    4. Skip Configuring NFS Access by selecting Next
    5. Configure Permissions
      1. When configuring for Active Directory integration, this can be left at Everyone Read/Write as Windows ACLs should be utilized for share access
        1. Windows ACLs will supersede the share permissions
      2. When configuring for local access, set the desired permissions
        1. Windows ACLs with Active Directory are strongly encouraged
        2. Permissions with local access must be configured on each vGateway
      3. Select Next
    6. Select Finish
    7. Confirm the share is listed
  4. Confirm the newly created share by accessing the filer in Windows Explorer
  5. Repeat steps 2, 3, and to create any additional required shares
  6. Confirm access to the individual shares by accessing the share itself and being utilizing the share
