Optics

1G Options

  • LX: Single-mode fiber (SMF)

  • SX: Multi-mode fiber (MMF)

10G Options

  • SR: Multi-mode fiber (MMF)

  • LR: Single-mode fiber (SMF)

Wavelengths

  • MMF: 850 nm

  • SMF: 1310 nm

Fiber Options and Specifications

Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)

  • Color: Yellow

  • Usage: High-speed, long-distance links

  • Characteristics: Small core for higher bandwidth, suitable for Telco applications

Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF)

  • Orange (62.5 micron): Common for 1G connections

  • Aqua (50 micron): Used for 10G intra-datacenter server connections

  • Characteristics: Suitable for short distances and robust environments

Connector Types

  • SC Connector: Subscriber Connector with push-pull mechanism, used for bi-directional communication

  • LC Connector: Miniaturized SC connector with a smaller ferrule

Optical Equipment

  • SFP Modules:

    • MMF: SX at 850 nm, up to 550m at 1.25 Gbit/s

    • SMF: LX/LH at 1310 nm, up to 10 km

    • Further Options: ZX, EX, CWDM, and DWDM for varying distances

Demarcation Point (Demarc)

  • The interface where the public network ends and connects to the customer’s wiring

  • Establishes responsibility boundaries between the customer and provider

  • Typically located in a building's basement, also known as MPOE (Minimum or Main Point of Entry)

Vendor Visits and Access

Carrier technicians have open access as needed, though scheduling visits in advance is appreciated. If technician details aren't available, this is not an issue.

Standard Cabling Colors

  • SMF (Single-Mode Fiber): Yellow

  • MMF (Multi-Mode Fiber): Aqua

  • Cat6/Copper Structured: Blue

  • Cat6/Copper Patch Cables: Yellow Slimline

Installation Requirements

  1. Attach the local carrier LOA document to the ticket once ready.

  2. Specify the cabinet number for circuit termination.

  3. Provide any relevant installation directions.

Additional Information

  • Expedient will attempt to locate the circuit upon receiving the LOA.

  • Materials will be ordered for installation if no issues arise, with custom-length cable extensions tailored to the project.

  • Estimated completion time is 7 business days once materials are received.

  • If the circuit cannot be located, the client must contact the carrier for a tag & locate dispatch.

Letter of Authority (LOA)

  • Purpose: Grants permission for cross-connect installation in the data center.

  • Contents: Precise location details, cabinet information, patch panel specs, media type, and instructions.

  • Benefits: Ensures accurate installation and serves as a reference for potential disputes, protecting the data center and contractor from liability.
