Importing Chats from ChatGPT or Claude

Prev Next

Overview

If you have chat history in ChatGPT or Claude, you can bring it into AI CTRL two ways:

  • Bulk import into your AI CTRL chat history. One export file can contain many conversations, and you import it as a single batch.
  • Add exported content to an AI CTRL Knowledge Base, so AI CTRL can reference it without recreating each conversation as a separate chat. [1]

Import requirements

Source platform Conversion required Import file
ChatGPT/OpenAI No Extract the export archive and import the conversations.json file directly.
Claude/Anthropic Yes Extract the export archive, open the manifest JSON file, copy the export URL for conversations-000.zip, and extract that zip to get conversations.json.

AI CTRL detects a standard ChatGPT export and converts it automatically during import. Do not convert a ChatGPT conversations.json file yourself.

AI CTRL does not convert Claude exports. Convert the Claude export to a conversations.json file before importing it. [1]

Option 1: Bulk import chat history

Use this when you want your full conversation history searchable inside AI CTRL.

This process imports conversation history. It does not reliably import attachments, images, Claude Projects, Claude Memory, project instructions, Custom GPT settings, artifacts and tool outputs, platform-specific metadata, or some formatting and conversation branches. If you need those, upload the relevant files separately to an AI CTRL Knowledge Base (see Option 2 below). [1]

Export your data from ChatGPT

Official instructions: Exporting your ChatGPT history and data

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Data Controls.
  4. Select Export Data. You'll receive a temporary code by email to confirm the request.
  5. Confirm the export request.
  6. Return to ChatGPT Settings and click Download the export once it's ready.

OpenAI emails you when the export is ready. This can take a few days depending on the size of your history. Extract the archive once it downloads. [1]

Export your data from Claude

Official instructions: How do I export my Claude data?

  1. Sign in to Claude.
  2. Open the account menu and select Settings.
  3. Open Privacy (or Data & Privacy).
  4. Select Export Data (or Export Conversations) and confirm the request.
  5. Claude emails you a download link that expires in 24 hours. Download the export before it expires.
  6. Open the downloaded manifest JSON file and copy the export URL for conversations-000.zip. The URL downloads an extractable zip folder.
  7. Extract that folder to get your conversations.json file.

Anthropic may move or rename this option. If you can't find it, check Anthropic's current documentation. Export files can contain confidential information, so review the contents before importing. [1]

Import the file into AI CTRL

  1. Sign in to AI CTRL Secure Chat.
  2. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Open Data Controls in the left sidebar.
  5. Select Import Chats.
  6. Click to select your conversations.json file from File Explorer.
  7. Wait for the import to complete. A confirmation message appears when it's done.
  8. Close the Settings window.

Importing adds conversations to your existing chat history; it does not replace what's already there. Large files take longer to upload than you might expect. Your imported conversations appear in your chat history, searchable like any other chat. Recent uploads also appear under Manage Files. [1]

Attach the file to a single chat instead

If you only need one conversation available in a single chat rather than your whole history, skip the bulk import:

  1. Start a new chat.
  2. Select More → Upload Files and choose your conversations.json file.
  3. Wait for the upload to finish.
  4. Ask the chat something like "Can you read this?" to confirm it loaded correctly. [1]

Option 2: Add exported content to a Knowledge Base

Use this when you want AI CTRL to reference past conversations or related material as background, without recreating each conversation as its own chat. A Knowledge Base can hold multiple files and be referenced across conversations, depending on your AI CTRL configuration. [1]

  1. Export your data from ChatGPT or Claude (steps above).
  2. Download and extract the export archive, and identify the specific files you want AI CTRL to reference.
  3. Sign in to AI CTRL.
  4. Open Workspace → Knowledge.
  5. Create a new Knowledge Base, or select an existing one.
  6. Upload the selected files to the Knowledge Base.
  7. Save or process the Knowledge Base.
  8. Start a new chat and select a model.
  9. Click the + at the bottom left of the model search bar, select Add Knowledge, and choose the Knowledge Base you created.
  10. Ask AI CTRL to use the content. [1]

Knowledge Base considerations

  • Upload only the files you intend to make available to AI CTRL.
  • Split large exports into smaller files if needed.
  • Remove unnecessary or sensitive content before uploading.
  • This option doesn't recreate your original conversations as separate chats in your history. [1]

Your data, your responsibility

Expedient provides the instructions and tools for this migration, but does not access, export, organize, convert, upload, or import your personal data from ChatGPT, Claude, or other third-party platforms on your behalf. You're responsible for:

  1. Requesting the data export from each source platform.
  2. Downloading the export files.
  3. Reviewing the export files before converting or importing them.
  4. Removing anything you don't need, including sensitive data.
  5. Downloading any converted output files.
  6. Importing the files into your AI CTRL environment.
  7. Verifying that the imported conversations are complete and correct. [1]
