Article summary

Overview:

IBM iSeries File System backups can be performed using a proxy server and the Commvault IBM iDataAgent module. The IBM iDataAgent module will be installed via an installation package transfer from the proxy client to the IBM iSeries server using FTP. The installation is finished using both the Commvault CommCell GUI and IBM iSeries server via command-line.

Requirements:

  • Unix-based Proxy Server
  • IBM iSeries Client Name
  • IBM iSeries Host Name
  • CVD Port Number (default is 9401)
  • IBM User Credentials

Version & System Requirements:

Disk Space:

  • 150 MB of minimum disk space is required for installing the software.
  • 400 MB of minimum free disk space is required for job result and log directory.

Defaults:

Backup sets are logical containers that define all of the production data that you want to protect. When you install the IBM i File System Agent client, a default backup set is automatically created, which contains the following subclients that are designed to act as a catch all, automatically detecting and protecting all data the agent is responsible to protect:

  • ALLDLO (All documents and folders)
  • ALLUSR (All user libraries)
  • CFG (The configuration objects)
  • HST log (The history logs)
  • IBM (All IBM supplied libraries)
  • LINK (The system directories, user directories, and the objects that the directories contain)
  • SECDATA (The security data)

Security & Permissions:

The software uses this user profile to run the Commvault backup and restore operations. You must select a user profile that meets the following requirements:

  • Has *SECOFR user class and at least the "*ALLOBJ, *JOBCTL, *SAVSYS" special authorities.
  • Is enrolled to the QDLS file system when QDLS data protection is required.
  • The profile has the language parameters set to English by using “LANGID(ENU) CNTRYID(US) CCSID(00037)”.

Special Considerations:

The IBM i File System Agent 1-Touch Disaster Recovery component is not supported, due to its need for sending system data to tape storage.

Synthetic Full backups cannot be run for Library File System (LFS) data because the software does not drop the data because it requires all of the archives and data packets for the restore.
